Michael Dukakis's running mate in the 1988 US presidential election was Senator Lloyd Bentsen, a seasoned politician from Texas. Bentsen had served in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and had a reputation as a moderate Democrat with expertise in tax policy and finance. He was also known for his strong support of the military and his advocacy for veterans' rights. Bentsen was chosen by Dukakis in part to help appeal to Southern and Western voters, but the Democratic ticket ultimately lost resoundingly to George H.W. Bush and his running mate, Dan Quayle.
